[ARCHIVED] Free introductory ice skating, ice hockey sessions at Mediacom Ice Park

Mediacom Ice Park offers two free introductory skating events this winter for those interested in trying ice sports.

The Ice Park’s figure skating program marks National Skating Month Saturday, Jan. 28, 1-2:30 p.m. with a free ice skating session for new and beginning skaters. Skaters of all ages are invited to spend time on the ice with coaches, who will introduce basic skills and provide assistance. This event is free and includes free stake rental. Registration is not required, but any new student who registers for Learn to Skate classes on Jan. 28 will receive a 50-percent discount on registration. Kids interested in ice hockey may sign up for Try Hockey for Free Day, Saturday, Feb. 25, 1-2 p.m. Boys and girls ages 4-9 years are invited to meet with coaches to learn hockey basics, with free skate rental and equipment usage. Arrive early to get outfitted.

“We look forward to welcoming kids to try the great sport of ice hockey,” said Al Valdivia, Hockey Director for the Springfield-Greene County Park Board. “Our goal is for kids to learn new skills with big smiles on their faces.”

Try Hockey for Free Day is a national program sponsored by USA Hockey, with the support of the National Hockey League and NHL member clubs. Try Hockey for Free Day is free for participants, but registration is required at TryHockeyForFree.com. For more information, call Al Valdivia at 417-874-2933.

Mediacom Ice Park, 635 E. Trafficway, is Springfield’s only ice skating facility, with two NHL-size ice rinks, skate rentals, a pro shop, lockers and concessions. The Ice Park offers daily public skating sessions as well as figure skating programs and ice hockey leagues for all ages and skill levels. It’s also home to the Missouri State Ice Bears Div. I and III Hockey, the Springfield Express Junior-A hockey team, the Springfield Youth Hockey Association and the Jordan Valley Figure Skating Club.
