Outdoor Days Sept. 7-9 at Lake Springfield Park

 

Springfield, MO, August 28, 2012 - The Springfield-Greene County Park Board partners with the Bass Pro Shops’ Outdoor Fitness Festival for a full weekend of outdoor recreation and adventure at the annual Outdoor Days, Friday, Sept. 7 through Sunday, Sept. 9 at Lake Springfield Park.

 

Beginners, seasoned outdoors enthusiasts and scouts are invited to take part in camping, hiking, fishing, boating, primitive skills and more outdoor activities as well as interact with demonstrations, crafts and vendors. Admission and many activities are free;races and instructional clinics have a registration fee. Register at 833-8647 or 833-8923.

 

Activities presented by the Park Board include:

Camping

Bring your own camper, trailer or tent for free overnight camping, Friday night through Sunday afternoon. Restrooms and water available, but no showers or RV hook-ups. Bonfire Saturday night, but no individual ground fires allowed. Bring your own meals. Registration required by Tuesday, Sept. 4. FREE.

Leave No Trace – National Certification

Leave No Trace Master Educator Kara Warren leads a hands-on overnight introduction to the national Leave No Trace program, focused on enjoying the outdoors responsibly and with minimum impact. For ages 18 and up; studentssupply their own gear and food for overnight tent camping. Course materialsprovided. Friday, 8:30 a.m. to Saturday, 11 a.m. Registration required by Sept. 4. $25.

Boatingand Water Safety Demonstrations

Hands–on demonstrations with boating instructors for ages 7 and up (adult partner required if under 18.) Offered in partnership with Safe Kids Coalition. FREE.

Canoing: Saturday, 1-3 p.m.

Kayaking: Sunday, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Paddleboarding: Sunday 1-2:30 p.m.

Canoe Sprint Race

Teams of two race Saturday morning at Lake Springfield. Bring your own canoe or rent one for $10. Register at 9 a.m., race at 10 a.m. Prizes of Bass Pro Shops merchandise cards awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams. $20/team.

Kayak Sprint Race

Single-person competition Saturday at Lake Springfield. Bring your own kayak or rent one for $10. Register at 9 a.m., race at 11:30 a.m. Prizes of Bass Pro Shops merchandise cards awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams. $15/person.

Dutch Oven Cookery

Dine like the pioneers with Dutch Oven Cooking. Participants will prepare, cook, and consume a Dutch Oven meal at Lake Springfield Park’s North Pavilion. Registration and payment is required by Aug. 31. Clinic is 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday. $15/person or $20 for two people.

 

Geocaching

Geocaching teams of two to four will be challenged to find family-friendly caches hidden throughout the area. Event is Sunday, Sept. 9, 3 p.m. Awards include Bass Pro Shops gift cards. Registration required by Sept. 4. $5/person.

Bat and Cave Awareness

Learn about Park Board caves and endangered Gray Bats, Big Brown Bats, Little Brown Bats and Tri-Colored Bats. Held at Sequiota Park, 3500 S. Lone Pine, Sunday, just after sundown. FREE.

 

Outdoor Days also includes the Bass Pro Shops Outdoor Village, the Boy Scouts of America village, the Missouri Department of Conservation and Ducks Unlimited village, Wonders of Wildlifeactivities, the Off-Road Camping Club Outdoor Skills village and the annualJames River Mountain Man Rendezvous village.
