Springfield, Mo. – Dickerson Park Zoo will honor its most beloved and popular animal, Henry the Hippo, on Sunday, Nov. 12, 2 p.m., with a Celebrate Henry ceremony at the zoo.
Henry was born August 8, 1981, and was humanely euthanized on October 31, 2017, after struggling with health issues for several months. Henry resided at Dickerson Park Zoo for more than 30 years, arriving when he was only 7 months old.
In June 2016, Henry relocated to the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan (SSP). Henry’s female partner at the Cincinnati Zoo, Bibi, soon became pregnant and gave birth to the world-famous Fiona.
Zoo Director Mike Crocker and some of Henry’s keepers will share personal stories about him at the ceremony. The ceremony will also be shared live on the Dickerson Park Zoo Facebook page.
Memorial donations for Henry may be made to Friends of the Zoo or here. All contributions made in Henry’s name will go toward a memorial plaque to display at the zoo.
Dickerson Park Zoo is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $12 for ages 13 and up, $8 for kids 3-12 and seniors 60+. Children 2 and under are free.
Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden has issued a news release about Henry, available here and viewable here.
