Weekend of holiday activities at Botanical Center
The Springfield-Greene County Botanical Center hosts several garden-themed holiday activities throughout the weekend, including:
“The Dickensian Christmas” Tablescapes with Peter Longley — Entertain with high style as you learn to dress your table for a special holiday meal inspired by Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” Host Peter Longley guides participants through designing a formal table setting for a Christmas meal, including building a floral centerpiece and arranging china, silver, glassware, linens and holiday décor. Each presentation includes a fictitious menu, poetry, readings and anecdotes related to the season. Presentations are followed by seasonal refreshments. Friday, Dec. 13, 6 p.m. Springfield-Greene County Botanical Center, 2400 S. Scenic Ave. Registration required, admission $10.
19th Annual Turkey Trot 5K Run/Walk draws 8,000
An estimated 8,000 took part in this morning’s 19th Annual Turkey Trot 5K Run/Walk, held at 8 a.m. in downtown Springfield. The annual event is Springfield’s largest timed 5K and the largest Thanksgiving Day 5K in Missouri, with proceeds benefiting Developmental Center of the Ozarks and the Springfield-Greene County Park Board Scholarship Fund. The event also serves as the largest one-day food drive of the year for Ozarks Food Harvest.

Tablescapes series explores holiday tabletops, dining traditions
Dinner hosts, party planners and anyone interested in presenting a fancy meal are invited to attend the Thanksgiving and Christmas Tablescapes series Friday, Nov. 15, and Friday, Dec. 13, at the Springfield-Greene County Botanical Center, in Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park, 2400 S. Scenic Ave., Springfield.
Mayor's tree lighting kicks off Festival of Lights
Springfield's annual Festival of Lights, presented this year by Mercy, will kick off at 5:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 23 at Jordan Valley Park. Mayor Bob Stephens will signal the start of the holiday season by lighting a 33-foot Norway spruce, located in the park, east of the Mediacom Ice Park. The musical tree and surrounding park will be lit up with thousands of lights.
